Dormers are a great way to update your home

Need a new roof?  Consider adding a dormer.

Dormers are a great way to update your home, improving both the exterior and interior.

6 Ways dormers can improve your existing home.

Gormley Designs LLC Added Hampton’s Style Dormer

This home needed a new roof which became an opportunity to update the exterior and improve the interior as well.  Here are 6 ways Gormley Designs uses dormers to renovate and update dated homes.

#1  Adding this Hampton’s style dormer brought more light into the interior.  It also took advantage of the amazing views.  Now the upper level looks out at the view of the ocean instead of only seeing the ceiling.  The lower-level room has become a dramatic brighter gathering space.

Interior Lighthouse Aesthetic

#2 Adding this single gable dormer to the top of a stair eliminates the feeling you are going to a drab basement.  It adds light, but it also adds grandeur.  The dormer gives the space a lighthouse aesthetic.  Basement stairs don’t have to feel like basement stairs.

#3  Adding multiple gable dormers creates a dramatic ceiling.  The four dormers allow light to flood the space throughout the day as the sun angles change.  The resulting ceiling form is unique, memorable and becomes a place that people are drawn to.

#4  Adding two gable dormers to this living room provided an opportunity to dramatically improve the dated interior.  The original room had low beams that created a very heavy-feeling space.  The new dormers draw the eye upward to exposed structure, and along with the decorative chandelier, result in an exciting room.  .  The dormers are not adding any floor space to the original area; however, the renovated room feels more spacious .

Natural Light in Bathroom

#5  Adding this simple shed-style dormer created an opportunity to have windows above a mirror in the bathroom.  Natural lighting is desirable in bathrooms.  The dormers bring natural light in while retaining privacy.

#6  Breaking up the roof with dormers gives the home more valuable space that is otherwise lost with lack of head room.  These dormers opened up the previously unused attic area into useable space.  This additional square footage is adding value to the home.  Updating the exterior also adds character and value to the home.

Closing Thoughts:

Look at needing that new roof as an opportunity to update your home.  Dormers can add value in many ways.  They deliver light to a dark space, create dramatic ceilings, resulting in spaces that people are drawn to.  New dormers add character and style that increase your home’s value. If you open up low head room areas, you can create more usable square footage.  The increased square footage also increases your property value.  Dormers typically yield excellent returns on your investments.  If you love your neighborhood but do not love your home, dormers can make your home the envy of the neighborhood.
